Gouache Montage Redo
Well here is the original G-Montage and the new and improved version. I tried a different approach to laying down the paint with the new version. I nearly covered the whole illustration board when I laid down the background so that it would turn out nice and smooth. I pretty much kept the dogs face and the green guys the same but on the dog's body and the boat I tried to revise the textures & make them more slick. I think that the new illustration is a lot better overall.

Larger 20*30 Bay Scene
I revised this scene slightly from the origination. I added some more color, and cleaned up some details, especially in the house. I think that working on a larger scale makes a lot more sense, especially with watercolor. The small scenes are just too easy to get cramped up with.

Gouache Montage
I am pretty happy with how this turned out, I just wished that it had printed better. I like the mix of different textures that I was able to capture both in the background and foreground elements. Not sure what I am going to do different for the redo.

Realistic & Sexy Product Illustration
I thinks that this illustration captured the sexiness that was needed for the assignment. I wish that I had some more detail brushed for the text, but I am very happy with how the green liquid and glass looks.

Line + Watercolor
I like this piece because it is so simple and effective. This makes me realize that I am spending too much time on other pieces just messing things up overworking it and not distilling them down to the needed elements.

Gouache Pickout
I really like the style of this piece. I think that the feeling of motion comes across very well with the line style. I think that the street sign is the biggest problem in this piece currently.
Here are the five pieces that I have selected for my midterm portfolio. I tried to select a wide range of the things that I have done. The collection represents a good sample of what I have accomplished thus far. Good times.

Gouache Montage - Sketch/Comp Stage

I decided to go the route of least coherence in regards to the three objects I chose. I think that the three shapes go together pretty well in the visual space, especially with the current organization. I had no problem with the sketching stage but I did run into problems when moving to color. I have discovered that it is a very different thought process working with markers than most other media. Having to work up to comp using lighter colors first and them moving darker was quite a challenge, especially with the mess the other students have left the markers in. I think that I am starting to understand it better now though. Now I just have to gouache it up.

Cartoon Final Phases

I think that this cartoon turned out pretty well . I had some problems initially getting a gag that would read well, but I think that it is pretty clear now. It is hard shifting gears from a realistic depiction of objects with water color and gouache to the more simplistic cartoon style. I will definitely have to experiment with different cartoon styles in the future since there are so many different things to play with stylistically. Good times.

Cartoon - sketching phase

These are the rough sketches that were picked and then built upon. I was not sure about how well I liked everything until the latest sketches where the idea is really starting to shape up nicely. I think that changing the angle and tweaking a few other things has helped to create a much more successful over all scene/comp. I need to work on some of the finer points before inking the whole thing up, but thus far I think it is progressing nicely.

This project was definitely a big challenge for me. I very much like having a reference point to work from, and for this I had a big scary blank canvas.
I have a better idea of what to do in the future as far the the process goes. I think that I was not using my earlier process as a building block, but starting over each time. I redid the last part of the piece and am happy that I did, although I still think that I could do much better in the future. Not a great final product but a helpful learning process non the less.
